DSMS Ski Trip

From February 27th to March 6th of 2015,  DSMS went on their annual skiing trip. This year we went to Sappada in the Italian Dolomites. After a 30 hour long trip, we finally arrived at the hotel, where we had to get fitted with our ski gear. Eventually, we got everything sorted and we were allocated with rooms. From then on, all eyes were set on skiing. The following day, we were set for our first day on the mountain. The first thing we did when we arrived at the resort was get split into groups. The groups were originally split into groups of beginners (people who haven’t skied before) and advanced skiers (people who have skied before). Over the course of the week, the groups were split into two once again meaning that the groups were full of people who were around the same ability. By the end of the week, everyone improved to the point where they were good enough to go onto the mountain and leave the nursery slope. Throughout the week, the instructors made many slalom courses that people could race down and try and beat their friends in a 1v1 downhill race. Most people enjoyed the competitive aspect of the slalom and everyone took on the challenge of reaching the bottom without falling over. By the end of the week, everyone improved massively and become confident skiers. Also, there was a competition to win the contents of the cup, which contained lots of money that people had had to hand over because they were fined. The winning group was team Dynamite because one member of the group managed to get from the beginners group all the way to the advanced group within the first four days. Overall everyone loved the experience of travelling to a foreign country and trying their hand at a challenging and unique sport.

Comic Relief 2015

So Comic Relief is back for another year, but with a new title; Comic Relief: Face the Funny. This refers to the annual attempt to make your face ‘funny for money’. Comic Relief, or Red Nose Day, offer many ways to do this, including selling nine new red noses with each a different and unique facial expression. This year, the event was kicked off and presented by Davina McCall and Lenny Henry (the founder of Comic Relief), and it showed many new and familiar sketches including Little Britain, the return of Mr Bean and the reveal of the real voice of James Bond. New sketches include the search for this years national treasure lead by Stephen Fry alongside Sheridan Smith and Miranda Hart. There were also many successful fundraising attempts, lead by Dermot O’Leary as he danced for 24 straight, raising over £500,000! Lenny Henry, Richard Hammond and Steve Backshall were involved in ‘Operation Health’ where they completely renovated an old health centre in Uganda, and saved lots of peoples lives. David Walliams broke the world record for the most kisses received in 30 seconds, and a new sketch from the Vicar of Dibley made comic relief 2015 a night to remember...

DSMS YR 7s 0-3 Hummersknott YR 7s

The DSMS Yr 7s were up for the challenge. In the reverse fixture of this tie, Hummersknott were 5-0 up, and it was only half time. This time, the youngest boys in the school were determined to turn it around, and they got off to a good start. It was a nice turn to get around to stranded defender, only to be brilliantly parried at the near post by the goal keeper. But Hummersknott hit them on the counter, rushing at their defence with the ball. The attacker beat his man and fired a shot into the far post, finding its way into the back of the net. 0-1. The worst possible start. The rest of the half involved the DSMS defence struggling to contain the constant Hummersknott threat. But the boys made it to half time. 0-1 down wasn’t a bad scoreline, and the second half gave them the wind, a win was still possible. And they began the half with real intent, as a beautifully lofted ball found our striker. He hit it on the volley and forced a great save from the keeper once again. They had really upped their game. But the counter-attack was really hurting them, and Hummersknott broke free and managed to slot another one home to put them 0-2 up. At this point the DSMS players were tiring, and they couldn’t play will the same fluency as they did at the beginning of each half. In fact they couldn’t replicate their performance at all, and they soon found themselves 0-3 down. Before they knew it, the game was over, and the reverse fixture was ringing through their minds.
